Know what comes with you
Template builders often keep the design. For example, Wix sites can't be moved to other hosting, and Squarespace exports only some content. Your words, photos and domain are usually yours to take.
Before you go
- Save your words and photos somewhere safe.
- Note your page addresses, so old links can point to the new site.
- Check any email you get through the builder, so it doesn't stop.
- Keep your old site live until the new one is ready.
Moving a .co.uk or .uk domain
Ask your current registrar to change the domain's IPS tag to your new registrar's tag. That's how .uk domains move between companies.
Moving a .com domain
Unlock the domain and ask for its transfer (authorisation) code, then start the transfer at the new registrar. A .com usually can't be moved within 60 days of being registered or last transferred.
