Own your domain

Your web address is part of your business. Make sure it's in your name.

Why it matters

Your domain (yourbusiness.co.uk) is on your van, your cards and your emails. If someone else registered it, they control it. If it lapses, someone else can take it.

Check who owns it

  • Find the company you pay for the domain. That's your registrar.
  • Log in and check the registrant (the owner) is you or your business, with an email you use.
  • If a web company registered it in their name, ask them to move it to yours.

Keep it safe

  • Turn on auto-renew, and keep the card on file up to date.
  • Use an email address you'll always have, not an old work one.
  • Turn on two-step login at your registrar if it's offered.

.co.uk or .com?

For a business serving customers in the UK, .co.uk is a sensible choice. If you can, register both and point one at the other, so nobody else uses the name.

We'll make you three. Which one's a Keepr?
